Seth Rogen says Sausage Party sequel would be inspired by this 80’s classic

Although SUICIDE SQUAD was number one at the box office, SAUSAGE PARTY won the weekend. It’s the movie that had everyone talking about its crudeness, hilarity and jaw-dropping final moments. Though it’s not the first R-rated animated movie to take the country by storm (you would have to go back to SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT in 1999), but it being the first computer-generated one basically makes it the TOY STORY of animated filth. And, as we all know, a sequel soon followed that last flick.

Last month, we reported that Rogen was already thinking about doing a sequel to PARTY, but now that the movie has come out he was able to shed a bit more light on the idea during an interview with Fandango. There are spoilers below, so those who haven’t seen the movie should proceed with grave, grave caution.

At the end of the movie the characters discover they’re not real, but are actually being voiced by Hollywood actors with names like Seth Rogen and Edward Norton, and they then travel via a STARGATE-like device to our world to meet us. Rogen was asked if this is where the sequel would kick off:

It's something we talk about, yeah. That's one of the reasons why we took away the [original] ending because we thought, well, if that was the first scene of the next movie it's probably not what you would want it to be, with them just seeing us and finding us basically. But the idea of a live-action/animated movie, like a Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-style hybrid is also very exciting, mostly because Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Like TOY STORY, PARTY took more than a few years to make because it simply hadn’t been done before, and selling the movie to the studio was undoubtedly tough. But now that the movie is out, and has done well for itself so far with a $33 million opening weekend, getting a sequel off the ground would be a much smoother process, according to Rogen. This is good, because even if there isn’t a sequel to PARTY there are still plenty more depraved ideas they have for animated movies:

We have ideas for other R-rated animated movies that have nothing to do with Sausage Party, and we're hoping this goes well so we get to make them. And hopefully it won't take this long to make the next one because it won't take five years to convince someone to make it. The whole problem before was there was no precedent for it, so hopefully [Sausage Party] will show people that this is a viable thing to do… or it'll do the opposite and this will be the last R-rated animated movie that ever gets made!

We will have to see what kind of legs PARTY has over the coming weeks, but if its box office numbers stay strong the light for a sequel won’t take long to turn green. But who knows, maybe this is the start of an adult-themed Pixar being born. TOY STORY came out and revolutionized animation, and 21 years later we now have a great library of classic works. I would love to see whatever other twisted ideas they could cook up to follow this, even if it’s not a ROGER RABBIT-inspired sequel to PARTY. The mind is a dirty place, and the magical world of animation can bring it all to life—anal beads and all.
