Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg to bring Robert Kirkman’s Invincible to screen

I have no evidence to back this up, but I'm fairly certain that, every morning, Seth Rogen eats the rights to comic book properties for breakfast. For real, this dude is involved with more superhero-related cinema than I can keep track of, and today, he's added another super-powered project to his plate.

The smoke on the digital street is that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will write, direct, and produce a movie based on THE WALKING DEAD creator Robert Kirkman's supremely violent superhero comic INVINCIBLE. Rogen, Goldberg and Kirkman (who is also set to produce the adaptation via his Skybound Entertainment alongside his Skybound cohorts David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst) will work side-by-side on the forthcoming project for Universal Pictures as a part of Skybound's first-look deal with Universal. James Weaver, Rogen and Goldberg will also produce courtesy of their Point Grey banner.

For those of you that are all like, "Huh? What the hell is INVINCIBLE all about?" The superhero comic in question is Kirkman's second-longest running title after THE WALKING DEAD which tells the story of Mark Grayson, an average high school student who is hiding quite the secret from his peers – his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, and he, too, will inherit his own array of superpowers.

As of the moment, INVINCIBLE (which Kirkman created with comic book creators Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker) is poised to publish its 133rd issue on comic store shelves this month, which will continue Mark's journey in discovering what it means to be the son of Omni-Man, and the crushing reality behind being the protector of planet Earth. 

In talking about his partnership with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Kirkman stated, “For nearly a decade I've had to endure the ‘what about Invincible?’ question as fans have watched The Walking Dead grow into the multi-media monstrosity it has become over the years. The answer was always that we were waiting for the right team to partner with. That team has arrived! The esteemed misters Goldberg and Rogen have proven themselves to be top-notch directors with a keen collective eye for stunning visuals after slumming it by writing hit after juggernaut hit.

Invincible's surprising, edgy, shocking, and oftentimes blood-soaked story couldn't be in more capable hands. With the team of Rogen, Goldberg and Universal, I'm very confident this will be another superhero movie, in a long line of superhero movies that continues to prove that it's a viable, thrilling genre that will keep people coming to the cinema for years to come."

Adding their voices to the excitement of this announcement, Rogen and Goldberg collectively said, "No matter how much damage it causes our bodies, minds, and our most intimate relationships with those we love, we will not rest until Invincible is as great a movie as it deserves to be."

I don't think I'm out of line when I say that this sucker better be Rated R when it hits theaters. If not, I'm going to squint my eyes, furrow my brow and do several voice exercises before shouting the word "Boo!" at the top of my lungs. Having read at least 30 or so issues of Kirkman's INVINCIBLE, I can tell you first-hand that this is a project worth getting pumped for, but only if the chains are off for everyone involved. That said, we've seen great things from Rogen and Goldberg in their presentation of Garth Ennis and the late Steve Dillon's PREACHER, so here's hoping that the same level of care is applied with project as well.
