From out of the shadows of New York City and into a movie theater near you, we've just learned that Nickelodeon is rebooting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for an upcoming CGI-animated adventure. Producing the feature-length presentation of fists, fury, and familial bonds are Point Grey Pictures' Seth RogenEvan Goldberg, and James Weaver. Meanwhile, Jeff Rowe (GRAVITY FALLS, CONNECTED) is set to direct, with Brendan O’Brian (NEIGHBORS: SORORITY RISING)  penning the screenplay.

“Adding Seth, Evan, and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do, and I know that Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction with their first-ever CG-animated theatrical,” said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family for ViacomCBS.

Over the past several years, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise has earned a total of $1.15 billion across six movies from three studios since 1990. While the last two movies, released by Paramount and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes in 2014 and 2016, left much to be desired for a sub-section of TMNT fans, there's no denying that the fearsome fighting team has only grown in popularity with each generation.

How this new project will emerge from the shadows of production has yet to be seen, be it a gritty interpretation of Kevin Eastman-Peter Laird's TMNT comic book, or an all-out action adventure complete with slapstick, pizza parties, and bodacious one-liners galore. After all, it was just last week when Kristine Belson, president of Sony Pictures Animation, Features, and Series, predicted that more PG-13 and R-rated animations are bound to come as a result of quarantine. With this in mind, it's entirely possible that Nickelodeon and Rogen's TMNT project could be a PG-13 affair.

We'll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for any updates, and can't wait to see what manner of raucous the Fab Four bring the mean streets of New York this time out.
