MGM has been trying to make a live-action version of WHERE’S WALDO? happen for a few years, but they haven’t quite been able to crack it. They’re hoping Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg might finally be able to find a way to bring the striped-shirted dude out from hiding in the crowd and onto the big screen.
Rogen and Goldberg will produce the film, along with their Point Grey partner James Weaver, as the studio and Classic Media have tapped Kyle Hunter & Ariel Shaffir to write the script. MGM picked up the rights to WHERE’S WALDO? back in 2011, but, as you can see, that hasn’t amounted to anything tangible since.
Don’t ask me how they can possibly try to make a movie out of WHERE’S WALDO?, because I’m as baffled as you. The books, which have sold more than 55 million copies worldwide, are nothing more than Find-It exercises that entertainingly help you kill some time. However, other than looking for this guy in a crowd of other things meant to trick your eyes and mislead you, there isn’t much to them. So how do you make a movie out of that? Who knows? But if they managed to make a LEGO movie that everyone dug, then I guess someone was bound to take their shot on something like WHERE’S WALDO? eventually.
Good luck to them. I imagine they’ll need it.
