With the massive box office success of TED, Seth McFarlane has a blank check for making his next film project. But, it seems like he may stick with what he knows best: animation.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McFarlane says that the FAMILY GUY movie is definitely happening and it is just a matter of when.
“We do know what the Family Guy movie will be. The Simpsons movie, I thought, was hilarious, but the one criticism I would have is that it’s a story they probably could’ve done on TV. There could’ve been an episode that had that plotline,” he said. “That’s the challenge with animation. You pretty much can do any story you want, so what is the reason for the movie? We finally hit on the answer to that question, and it will be something that would be impossible to do on TV.”
I enjoy FAMILY GUY as a throwaway piece of entertainment. If it is on, I will watch it, but it is not destination viewing for me. Yes, it makes me laugh but 22 minutes of cutaway gags is fine. I don’t think I could watch 90 minutes of it. THE SIMPSONS MOVIE was able to tell a large scale story within the confines dictated by the show. SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT took the unexpected route and made a musical. In both cases, I consider them good movies. Can FAMILY GUY do the same thing?
It remains to be seen if Seth McFarlane can duplicate his TED success. I think that he can, especially if he stays with unique and original ideas. I will not hold my breath for the FAMILY GUY movie, but I am interested to see what he will do.
