You may have heard of a little picture called SELMA that's been snowballing into a media frenzy since it hit theaters in limited release. At the very least, you're probably aware that it has earned itself no less than a Best Picture nomination in this year's Academy Awards. You can check out our review of the film here, but it goes without saying that the relatively new writer/director, Ava DuVernay, does an incredible job of mixing character development with historical events regarding the story of Martin Luther King's epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. Well, it looks like she's aiming to do so again and she's bringing along SELMA lead David Oyelowo with her. The two are looking to re-team in a film featuring a compelling love story and an involving murder mystery set around the events of Hurricane Katrina.
DuVernay will write/direct and produce, with Oyelowo producing and starring. As of now, no production date has been set but I imagine sometime later this year isn't too far off. The public already has their eyes on SELMA, and if that manages to win the Oscar for Best Picture, you can bet there will be quite a following to check out what DuVernay has up her sleeve next. Given that this Katrina movie is going to happen regardless, hopefully we have another powerful drama coming our way in 2016.
SELMA is now in theaters.
