Selena series trailer showcases Christina Serratos as the musical icon

Netflix today launched a trailer for Selena: The Series, which aims to tell the inspiring story of Selena Quintanilla Perez, whose journey toward becoming the "Queen of Tejano music" is legendary beyond measure. Created and executive produced by Moisés Zamora, with Don Todd consulting, Netflix's new and inspiring look at Selena's life and career stars Christian Serratos as Selena, with Gabriel Chavarria, Ricardo Chavira, Noemí Gonzalez, and Seidy López also starring.

Here's the official synopsis, per Netflix:

Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. Selena: The Series explores her journey from singing small gigs to becoming the most successful female Latin artist of all time — and the years of hard work and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together.

Tragically, Quintanilla Perez's life was when the Mexican-American singer was murdered by fan club president Yolanda Saldivar in 1995. When she was alive, Selena spent a solid portion of her storied career breaking down barriers in the male-dominated Tejano genre. So impactful were her efforts that she won the Grammy for Best Mexican-American album in 1994, making her the first female to win the category.

Recently while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Zamora told the outlet what fans can expect from the new series, saying, "I can't tell you exactly the time frame we will cover but I can say we have a lot of special surprises coming up." Zamora then added, "Fans can expect to see us go into the depths of this family's journey, including their early days going from gig-to-gig. Selena was on the road since she was like 11 or 12 and it was truly a family affair. You'll see her coming of age as she transforms into the incredibly confident superstar everyone knows and loves. We will dive into the family dynamics and will show some interesting things people don't know about the Quintanillas."

While Selena may be gone, she is far from forgotten. To this day, fans continue to be inspired by the singer's fiery stage presence, timeless Tejano music, and progressive moves in what is still a male-dominated entertainment medium.

Part one of the two-part series premiers on Netflix on December 4, 2020.
