Well, it only took two days but Warner Bros has released the SDCC trailer for David Ayer‘s SUICIDE SQUAD online in HD. After the exclusive sizzle reel wowed audiences in San Diego, a pirated copy appeared online. The low resolution was enough to get the Internet buzzing about seeing Jared Leto‘s Joker in action along with the rest of the cast but it was always intended to be for SDCC audiences only.
Warner Bros’ Sue Kroll, the studio’s president of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, issued this statement about the release of the high resolution trailer today.
“Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.”
As much as I respect the special nature of SDCC, the release of the BATMAN V SUPERMAN trailer and not this one seemed like an odd choice. Both SUICIDE SQUAD and DEADPOOL blew audiences away this weekend but we will need to wait a little longer to see Ryan Reynold’s trailer. The actor shared on his Twitter feed that the DEADPOOL trailer will be released in three weeks as the final FX shots are completed. If you need to do the math, three weeks will put the trailer right in prime position to debut with Fox’s FANTASTIC FOUR on August 7th.
