After making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in The Avengers, Cobie Smulders went on to play S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and What If…?. We haven’t seen the last of the good agent as Deadline has reported that Cobie Smulders is set to reprise her role for Marvel’s upcoming Secret Invasion series for Disney+.
In addition to Cobie Smulders, the Secret Invasion series is also set to star Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, as well as Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo, and Killian Scott. Secret Invasion is written and executive produced by Kyle Bradstreet under the direction of Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim. Production on the six-episode series has been underway for several months, and we caught our first glimpse of the series at Disney+ Day in November.
As with the comic series, it’s expected that Secret Invasion will deal with a secret infiltration of Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said earlier this year that it likely won’t match the scope of the comic. “Well, there were more characters in the Secret Invasion comic series than there were in Endgame so, no,” Feige said. “It’s not that but it very much is a showcase for Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelson and tapping into the paranoia elements of the Secret Invasion comic series that was great with the twists and turns that that took. So, that’s certainly our focus more than, ‘Can we cram in more characters than Endgame? like publishing?’” Secret Invasion is expected to launch on Disney+ in 2022.
