While speaking at the Guardian International Television Festival, HBO head Mike Lombardo announced production will begin next month on season two of True Detective, and revealed the next season won't be as dark as the first.
Lombardo says he's read the first two hours of Nic Pizzolatto's script for the second season, and while he does think the writing is better, he also says it's not as bleak compared to the first season.
It's still dark. Nic explores the darkness in people's souls. It's not as dark, but it's not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.
Mike Lombardo goes on to say an announcement will be made soon as to which filmmakers will be directing episodes of the second season, and says it will feature three cops, with one being a woman. It's been rumored Elisabeth Moss might be playing a cop in the new season, so maybe those character and plot details from earlier this month are true.
The second season obviously won't be as light as say FOX's Bones, but I do think many expected it to be even darker than the first season. What are your thoughts on a slightly less gloomy second season of True Detective?
