Deadline reports that Sean Gunn will play Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe. The evil businessman was previously played by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984.

It’s not known if Sean Gunn will appear as Maxwell Lord in Superman: Legacy, which will be written and directed by James Gunn, but Deadline has heard that the character will merely be mentioned in the background, setting the stage for a future DC appearance. Maxwell Lord first appeared in Justice League #1 in 1987 and wasn’t originally a villain, but he later became an adversary to the Justice League and to Wonder Woman in particular. Although he initially had no abilities, he later gained the power to telepathically influence the minds of others.

Sean Gunn has appeared in a number of his brother’s productions, most notably as Kraglin in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Maxwell Lord also won’t be Gunn’s first DC role, as he previously played Weasel in The Suicide Squad. He will reprise the role of Weasel for the upcoming Creature Commandos animated series, as well as lend his voice to G.I. Robot.

As for Superman: Legacy, James Gunn recently said that the script is 99.9% complete. The film is set to star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. We’ll also see Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult (Renfield), who was once up for the role of Superman, is set to appear as Lex Luthor.

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has also teased that Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman: Legacy is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025,
