Screen Gems already wants to remake Indonesian action film The Raid

If I were a big Hollywood type wanting to make some money, I think I’d want to capitalize on the terrific word of mouth for THE RAID, the Indonesian action film that made some big waves at the Toronto International Film Festival recently. The one problem I would have, though, is that the film is full of unmarketable, non-English speaking brown people. What’s a rich white person to do?!

According to THR’s Heat Vision, Screen Gems has come in and is currently negotiating to remake THE RAID, a film that hasn’t even been released yet! The original film’s writer-director Gareth Evans has reportedly already declined to helm the new version, focusing instead on making a sequel that he hopes to begin shooting in February. Screen Gems is looking to hire a new director shortly.

Below is a rundown of THE RAID’s story as well as the kickass trailer. The film has no set release date just yet, though a distribution deal with Sony is in place which means we’ll be getting slapped with actiony goodness soon enough.

Deep in the heart of Jakarta’s slums lies an impenetrable safe house for the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the run-down apartment block has been considered untouchable to even the bravest of police. Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness and silence, an elite swat team is tasked with raiding the safe house in order to take down the notorious drug lord that runs it. But when a chance encounter with a spotter blows their cover and news of their assault reaches the drug lord, the building’s lights are cut and all the exits blocked. Stranded on the sixth floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city’s worst to survive their mission. Starring Indonesian martial arts sensation Iko Uwais.
