It's been over twenty years since writer Kevin Williamson first contributed to the horror genre with the Wes Craven-directed slasher SCREAM, and he's been generating genre content ever since. Among the big screen projects he has worked on are I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, SCREAM 2, THE FACULTY, CURSED, and SCREAM 4, and he has also been responsible for TV shows like The Following, Stalker, and The Vampire Diaries.
Most of Williamson's movies were made for Dimension, which was the genre label of the Disney-owned Miramax back in the SCREAM days. When Miramax/Dimension founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein moved on from Disney to form The Weinstein Company, they took Dimension with them and left Miramax behind. Disney went on to sell Miramax to Filmyard Holdings, and Miramax has been operating solely as a library-based company for several years… But now it's making a comeback.
With Bill Block as its Chief Executive Officer and Nasser Al-Khelaifi as Chairman, Miramax is getting back into the film and TV production business, and as part of this endeavor they have set up a first-look deal with Williamson, who will be developing "elevated genre film content" for the company.
Block had this to say about the deal with Williamson:
We are delighted for Kevin and his creative forces to return to his film making roots with our company. Kevin’s diverse talents are the perfect fit for Miramax who is looking to support talent across all platforms."
Williamson added:
I’m thrilled to be partnering with Bill Block and to be back in the feature space working with new filmmakers in the genre I love so much."
As Williamson gets to work, Miramax already has two genre films on their slate: THE PERFECTION, a story of sinister obsession that stars GET OUT's Allison Williams as a cello prodigy, and Blumhouse Productions' HALLOWEEN sequel, which is scheduled to be released on October 19th.
