The biggest asset of the Scream franchise, besides its ultra-meta humor that's mixed with all the fun of a slasher movie, is its mystery. All of the films have been a true whodunit and maintaining that secrecy has been quite the challenge since the sequels began emerging beginning in 1997 with Scream 2. It looks like, after all of these years, things haven't changed because a report from "Bloody Disgusting" has revealed that the latest addition to the franchise has multiple scripts and edits to prevent spoilers from leaking online.
As the report indicates, there were multiple versions of the screenplay which was apparently down to prevent various members of the cast from knowing the entirety of the story during filming. There are also multiple edits of the film itself to keep things, particularly under wraps until the film hits screens next year. The biggest takeaway from this is that if you see any supposed leaks online, you might want to take them with a grain of salt.
Plot details about the new Scream have been pretty scarce. Filming took place in North Carolina last year and wrapped up nicely even under heightened safety protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We also know that the film won't be a reboot since original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Marley Shelton are all returning.
What's exciting is that part of the Radio Silence directing team that brought us Ready or Not, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are at the helm of the project with Chad Villella on board as an executive producer. Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original film and co-created the franchise with the directional help of the late Wes Craven, is also keeping things in line as an executive producer.
Written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, the new Scream also features a fresh cast of victims that includes Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Kyle Gallner, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, and Sonia Ammar. They'll be joining a franchise that has grossed more than $600 million to date at the global box office which makes it one of the most successful horror franchises of all time.
