Last week, we heard that James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, the writers of the new Scream movie (read our review HERE) “have a really great idea” for where the franchise should go, and that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett would sign on to do a sequel “in a heartbeat” if they were asked. Since the movie’s worldwide box office crossed the $100 million mark since we posted that article, it’s no surprise to hear that Spyglass Entertainment and Paramount Pictures want more Scream from this creative team. The companies have officially given a greenlight to the next sequel, with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett returning to direct and Vanderbilt and Busick writing the screenplay.
They’re moving fast on this one, too. Scream 6 – which we’re going to call it until we’re told otherwise – is expected to start filming this summer!
Vanderbilt will be producing the film alongside his Project X Entertainment partners Paul Neinstein and William Sherak. Kevin Williamson, writer of the original Scream, serves as executive producer with Chad Villella, Gary Barber, and Peter Oillataguerre.
Bettinelli-Olpin, Gillett, and Villella make up a team known as Radio Silence, and the trio offered the following statement to Deadline:
Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes and Kevin so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the ‘Scream’ saga to life.”
Reps for Spyglass and Paramount added:
We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.”
And Vanderbilt and Busick had this to say:
Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the ‘Scream’ story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor.”
