Earlier today, Paramount released a teaser trailer and a poster for Scream 6, which is set to reach theatres on March 10, 2023. (The teaser trailer is embedded above, and you can see the poster in this article.) Now Entertainment Weekly has unveiled a new image from the film, and it confirms that Ghostface will be sporting a slightly new look in the latest sequel! This look was hinted at on the poster, but this image shows that the different look for the mask wasn’t just a stylistic choice made for the marketing materials. It is in the movie.
Set in New York City, Scream 6 was actually filmed in Montreal. Directed by Scream 2022 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by Scream 2022 writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, this one will show us what happens when
the four survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.
Those four survivors are the Scream 2022 characters played by returning stars Melissa Barrera (as Samantha Carpenter), Jenna Ortega (as Samantha’s sister Tara Carpenter), Jasmin Savoy Brown (as Mindy Meeks-Martin), and Mason Gooding (as Mindy’s brother Chad Meeks-Martin). Courteney Cox is reprising the role of Gale Weathers. Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Dermot Mulroney, and Henry Czerny have also been cast in unspecified roles. And Scream 4‘s Hayden Panettiere is back as Kirby Reed. According to YouTuber Critical Overlord, it looks like Thomas Cadrot might be in the cast as well.
Vanderbilt is producing Scream 6 with Paul Neinstein and William Sherak for Project X Entertainment. Original Scream screenwriter Kevin Willamson serves as executive producer alongside Chad Villella, Ron Lynch, Cathy Konrad, Marianne Maddalena, and Spyglass’s Gary Barber and Peter Oillataguerre.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gillett said that moving the story to New York City was a “fun opportunity to explore what that would feel like, bringing the world of Scream into that setting. The teaser is a good example of how we’re having fun with that throughout the movie. That is one of many sequences in the movie that uses the city really to its benefit and in surprising and thrilling ways.“
Neve Campbell was asked to reprise the role of franchise heroine Sidney Prescott in Scream 6, but passed on it due to a pay dispute. Acknowledging that Campbell opting out “greatly” impacted the script, Gillett said, “We love Neve, and we’re huge fans of Sidney Prescott, but it felt like there’s an opportunity to really dig into this new crop of characters, and I think people will be really surprised and pleased with how successfully this movie does that. This movie’s been in our lives now for quite a while, but I think that we are still consistently surprised by how rich and how interesting and deep the relationship is between the four of them in this movie.“
Now we’ll address Ghostface’s new look, which is reminiscent of the old and weathered mask looks that Michael Myers sported in the Rob Zombie films and the more recent Blumhouse trilogy. Given how heavily influenced the original Scream was by the original Halloween, it seems fitting that Ghostface would follow Myers’ example and wear a messed up mask.
Gillett said the beat-up mask “will make sense in the context that you see it in the movie. That was another one of the really interesting risks and creative approaches in this movie. It’s meta in a different way, and the mask very much factors into that.“
Bettinelli-Olpin added, “It was not an arbitrary choice.“
