Scott Pilgrim anime series in development for Netflix

Scott Pilgrim, anime series, Netflix

It’s time for Sex Bob-Omb to play once again. According to THR, Netflix and UCP are developing an anime series adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s classic graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim.

Bryan Lee O’Malley is set to write and executive produce the Scott Pilgrim anime series along with BenDavid Grabinski. Netflix hasn’t given the project a series order yet, but if it does move forward, O’Malley and Grabinski would also serve as co-showrunners. “Part action fantasy, part romantic comedy, Scott Pilgrim is centered on the titular slacker living in Toronto and in a garage band named Sex Bob-Omb with his friends,” reads THR’s description. “His life is turned upside down when he meets Ramona Flowers, an American girl who is recently single. But before their love can blossom, Pilgrim finds himself challenged by his love’s seven previous relationships, and must defeat them in over-the-top fashion.” Science SARU is set to provide the animation for the series, with the company’s Eunyoung Choi serving as producer and Abel Gongora as director.

Scott Pilgrim was previously brought to life by Edgar Wright over a decade ago, who also happened to be involved with the anime series as an executive producer. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World featured Michael Cera as Scott with Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona. Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Brandon Routh, and Chris Evans also starred in the film. Despite receiving extremely positive reviews, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a box office bomb upon release, but it has garnered a passionate cult following over the years. The film was even re-released in theaters last year in order to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
