Peyton List plays the antagonistic character Tory Nichols on the Netflix series Cobra Kai, and now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that she has just signed on for the lead role in a different streaming series: List will be starring in the Paramount+ show School Spirits… which may not end up being Arrow in the Head material in the long run, but for now the fact that it stars Peyton List and deals with the afterlife has our attention.
Based on a graphic novel by Nate and Megan Trinrud and Maria Nguyen that isn’t expected to be released until the fall of 2023, School Spirits will center on
a teen (List) stuck in the afterlife who decides to investigate her mysterious disappearance alongside a group of other students who are also stuck in limbo at their high school.
Oliver Goldstick, who was an executive producer on the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars, will serve as showrunner on School Spirits. Goldstick will also be executive producing the show with the Trinruds and Nguyen, who are writing the pilot script. The pilot will be directed by Max Winkler – yep, the son of Henry Winkler, a.k.a. The Fonz. Max Winkler previously directed the films Ceremony, Flower, and Jungleland, as well as episodes of the shows Clark and Michael, The New Normal, New Girl, Fresh Off the Boat, Casual, The Grinder, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Lady Dynamite, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Cruel Summer, Minx, American Horror Story, and American Horror Stories.
School Spirits is coming to us from Awesomeness Live Action Studio. The company’s executive VPs Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin are overseeing production and development. Phelan and Olin also happen to be the co-heads of Nickelodeon… so while the set-up of a girl investigating her own disappearance while stuck in limbo has the potential to be dark and creepy, that’s probably not the direction they’ll be taking with this show.
