San Diego Comic-Con is officially underway, but things kicked off on a very dark and creepy note last night with Scare Diego where a bunch of freaky details emerged for of some of the biggest upcoming horror movies. Our own Paul Shirey was on hand where movies like IT: CHAPTER TWO, THE NUN, THE CURSE OF LA LLORONA and ANNABELLE 3 were discussed. The night ended with a séance, but Cthulu was unable to be summoned.
Of course, the big-ticket item was IT, so that’s what the night kicked off with. The audience was treated to a clip from the movie but given shooting hasn’t been in production all that long there wasn’t a ton to show off. The clip found the now adult Loser’s Club meeting up at a Chinese restaurant after years apart, with Bill Hader’s Richie Tozier asking, “Soooo, what do you guys wanna talk about?” Then Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise shows up, looking as creepy as ever. Director Andy Muschietti says the movie will be much scarier than the first, so be sure to come prepared…undergarment wise.
Next up was LA LLORONA, a new supernatural horror film from producer James Wan and starring Linda Cardellini, Sean Patrick Thomas, Raymond Cruz and more. It centers on a single mother and social worker who discovers an evil spirit (origins of whom detailed below) is terrorizing a family she’s working with, only for the demon to target her and her family. Some clips were shown, and word is it looks like a solid horror flick that should inspire some comparisons to THE NUN.
Then some clips were shown for THE NUN, and then some plot details were shared about ANNABELLE 3, which will be written and directed by Gary Dauberman (who wrote ANNABELLE 2 and IT). The movie will focus on the time after the cursed doll is bought back to the Warren home (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) and begins to terrorize the young daughter, with Wan saying it’s “NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM with Annabelle.”
So that’s how Comic-Con kicked off: by everyone peeing their pants. Today marks the start of all the less terrifying stuff, so be sure to stay tuned for all the goodies here at JoBlo.com, and you can see tons of cool pics by following JoBlo and Paul Shirey on Twitter (@joblocom, @arcticninjapaul).
