Scarlett Johansson will compute sexuality in Spike Jonze’s Her

Spike Jonze is an interesting filmmaker to watch with his kooky and borderline hypnotizing projects. This guy isn’t the water in the glass or the glass its self– he’s that painting on the wall that everyone tries to analyze but never wind up with the same take.

His next project HER focuses on a “lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with his newly purchased operating system that’s designed to meet his every need.” The cast is a rather stellar one including Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, and Amy Adams. Samantha Morton was originally cast as the operating system, but now has been replaced with Scarlett Johansson.

Jonze explained the recasting in an email yesterday:

I think, unfortunately, it’s pretty normal in terms of my not-quite-painless-for-everyone-involved ‘process’ of discovering what the movie is.

Samantha was with us on set and was amazing. It was only in post production, when we started editing, that we realized that what the character/movie needed was different from what Samantha and I had created together. So we recast and since then Scarlett has taken over that role.

I love Samantha. I’ve been friends with her forever and I hope we make lots of things together in the future.

Be well,

Spike

I wonder if a cut with Morton will make the DVD extras. I’m interested in what she brought versus what Johansson offers. The first clips from HER will play during a panel for BEING JOHN MALKOVICH at the Los Angeles Film Festival on Saturday night.
