Let's take a quick poll: how many of you saw the word "dark" in the headline and groaned and/or rolled your eyes? I know it's the popular word lately when talking about comic book movies, but Scarlett Johansson has some very nice things to say about Joss Whedon's script for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The actress was recently interviewed by Parade Magazine, and they asked her what fans should expect in the new film.
"Well, we can expect the Avengers. Joss [Whedon], again, is back, wrote the script, and is directing. I think the script is dark and it’s dry, it’s got this amazing one-liner, glass-cutting sense of humor. Obviously the script is very cerebral. It doesn’t lose that exciting comic book aspect that people enjoyed in the first film, but it’s smart and it feels like the next installment. It doesn’t feel like a rehashing, it feels like these characters are moving forward, plotlines are moving forward. It’s deep and I think that’s why people really respond to the Marvel universe, because the films are fun and exciting and have all that flashy stuff, but there’s a gravity to them. People can expect that gravity this time around.”
Does that mean we should expect THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON to be as dark as say THE DARK KNIGHT? Probably not, but obviously things are going to get very serious in the next film, and in future movies. Marvel's cinematic universe is getting bigger and bigger with each new movie, and the stakes will probably be higher in THE AVENGERS: THE AGE OF ULTRON than they were in the first movie. We saw how the events in the last movie impacted the lives of Iron Man and Thor in their post-Avengers solo films, and I can only imagine how f*cked up some of these characters might be after having to deal with Ultron in the next movie.
THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will be released on May 1st, 2015.
