Alright, you nerdy boys and girls, it’s that time again where we get an update on any potential Black Widow movie. The project has been hinting at and craved for years, and seems to be one of the only Marvel movie fans are dying for that is not in active development. But it seems like we are crawling our way there, and Scarlett Johansson is still confident it could happen…maybe.
She sat down to talk GHOST IN THE SHELL with Total Film, and naturally the subject came up. She mentioned how she and Kevin Feige are in the same mindset, but that actually finding time to do it is the biggest concern:
I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible. I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself.
However, another obstacle in the way is Marvel’s ever growing roster:
Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do. If I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.
She has said before that it would make sense to do it while she still “wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit,” but expressed some doubt as to how much longer that would be. Those doubts seem to still be with her, but fan desires are still fueling her:
[I] don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably.
We've been hearing about the possibility of this movie for years, but it seems there is just not a whole lot of room for it given the studios crowded slate. That is not only a logistical factor, but a story one as well. Each Marvel movie has some shared means-to-an-end involved (mainly Infinity Stones and expanding realities, so far), and fitting a Black Widow movie into that larger picture would be difficult. Her movie would be like a spy thriller, but the MCU doesn’t play on that small a level, well, ever. It would be awesome no doubt, but we can’t have everything that’s awesome. Thanks, Congress!
GHOST IN THE SHELL arrive March 31.
