Scarlett Johansson is set to finally lead her own MCU film with BLACK WIDOW after assisting her fellow heroes in various AVENGERS films & while most of us think this is long overdue, Johansson believes that a few years ago this movie couldn't have possibly happened.
While speaking with "Entertainment Weekly" for their BLACK WIDOW cover story, the actress opened up as to why this project has taken so long to come to the big screen. She knows that fans have wanted this for awhile but she believes now is the right time for it to finally happen:
"For anyone who said to me, ‘Oh, this [Black Widow film] should’ve happened five or 10 years ago,’ I’m like, it would not have been as substantial. We just would not have been able to do it. This film is happening now as a result of what’s going on in the zeitgeist, and I think it’s pretty cool."
Johansson graces the cover of "Entertainment Weekly's" new isssue and the magazine also features more photos of the star and a new still from the film featuring herself and new MCU co-stars Florence Pugh & Rachel Weisz. The new film, a prequel that takes place between CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR & AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, will explore more of Natasha Romanoff's past, something fans have wanted since the character was introduced in IRON MAN 2.
Johansson is right about the timing being perfect for BLACK WIDOW. A few years ago studios may have balked at the idea of female-led comic book films but after the success of WONDER WOMAN & CAPTAIN MARVEL, it has made films like BIRDS OF PREY & now, BLACK WIDOW, possible. Johansson has sort of been the "First Lady" of the MCU so it's fitting that she's finally getting her moment to shine on her own.
Do YOU think this was the right time for the film? BLACK WIDOW hits screens on May 1, 2020.
