It should not come as a surprise that Joss Whedon plans to change things up in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. We already know that Hank Pym may not be the creator of Ultron in the movie and now comes word that we should expect something different from the costume design for Scarlet Witch.
Speaking with Nerdist, Whedon put the kibosh on Wanda Maximoff’s traditional headgear:
“No. She might wear a headband or something that might echo it. The guys at Marvel, the conceptual artists, are phenomenal, and they are so good at taking the essence of what works and interpreting it for the actual human body, and when they paint something you can not only tell how it’s gonna work on a person, you can even tell what fabric it’ll be. They are very specific, very talented. So I’m excited to see the designs. Obviously we want to echo the look that people know, but there’s the classic look and the Ultimates look, but you have to do it in a way that will work. But it can’t be too old school… she can’t wear a leotard.”
Redesigns can go many ways. Some disliked the modernized Captain America costume and almost everyone despised the Hawkeye outfit Jeremy Renner wore in the first AVENGERS movie. Thor, Iron Man, and Hulk all wear their standard gear but updated for the silver screen. I have a feeling that the decision to change Scarlet Witch’s outfit has less to do with modernizing her character but rather separating any potential references or reminders to Magneto’s helmet.
I have high hopes for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON since all of the pesky origin of the team is out of the way and now Whedon can just play. I am fine with changing Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. I just demand that they keep Ultron looking like Ultron.
THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens on May 1, 2015.
