Way back in April of 2021, before Spiral: From the Book of Saw had even been released, we heard that a tenth Saw film (which Production Weekly referred to as Saw X) was already in active development. At the end of last year, it was confirmed that Jigsaw and Spiral screenwriters Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg were working on the script for a new Saw film, with Stolberg promising that this one “is gonna make John Kramer fans very happy!” Now Lionsgate has officially announced that Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter director Kevin Greutert is returning to the helm for Saw X, which is aiming for an October 27, 2023 release.
In addition to directing two previous Saw movies, Greutert also edited the first five entries in the franchise, as well as Jigsaw.
Details on the new sequel – which isn’t officially titled Saw X at this time – are being kept under wraps. But it has been said that “The upcoming Saw movie is planned to be very much a John Kramer story … The idea is that the story is being told from Kramer’s point of view as opposed to following the trap victims.” We’ll have to wait and see whether or not that pans out.
Franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules provided the following statement:
We have been listening to what the fans have been asking for and are hard at work planning a movie that Saw aficionados and horror fans alike will love. And part of that is giving the reins to Kevin Greutert, director of Saw VI, which is still one of the fans’ favorites in the entire series.”
The press release announcement says “fans can be assured that the new film will capture their hearts – and other body parts – with all-new twisted, ingenious traps and a new mystery to solve.”
