Saw X director says Amanda will be a “major character”

Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) was introduced in the very first Saw movie as a young heroin addict who was the only known survivor of one of Jigsaw’s games. After being revealed as Jigsaw’s apprentice in the second movie, Amanda went on to be featured in several more sequels and is set to return for Saw X.

While speaking with GamesRadar, Saw X director Kevin Greutert said that Amanda will be a “major character” in the upcoming sequel.

I would say that she’s a major character in this story and I really wanted to explore that area between what we see in Saw 1 where she’s a very vulnerable recovering drug addict and the kind of sassy rebel in Saw 3,” Greuter said, “but Saw 2 in a way doesn’t really count as character development for her except to show that she’s working with Jigsaw but she’s playing the role for the other characters that are trapped in Saw 2, so this is an opportunity to sort of develop her character more.

The last few films in the Saw franchise were seriously light on John Kramer/Jigsaw, but Kevin Greutert has said that the new sequel will feature more of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw than in any other film in the franchise. “Kramer is the centre of the story,” Greutert said. “They tried to make the last Saw without Tobin, and to me, that was a pretty gutsy move.

John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most chilling installment of the SAW franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game,” reads the official Saw X synopsis. “Set between the events of SAW I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Saw X will hit theaters on September 29th.
