Back in 1984, the decision was made to try to bring the FRIDAY THE 13TH franchise to an end with its fourth installment, which was titled FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER. Jason Voorhees, the killer at the center of the series, was seemingly killed off for good in the climax of the film, but in the movie business money is more powerful than a machete to the head, so when THE FINAL CHAPTER was successful at the box office more sequels followed. The next two movies after THE FINAL CHAPTER both featured scenes in which Jason’s grave was disturbed – in FRIDAY THE 13TH: A NEW BEGINNING, Jason is dug up in a nightmare, a nightmare that sort of comes true in JASON LIVES: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI.
Like Paramount had FRIDAY THE 13TH, Lionsgate also has a franchise with a long-dead horror icon at the forefront, SAW and the trap-building Jigsaw. Taking a play out of the FRIDAY THE 13TH handbook, Lionsgate attempted to end the SAW series (at part 7) with a film called SAW: THE FINAL CHAPTER back in 2010. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER was so famously not the final chapter in that series, calling their “last SAW movie” SAW: THE FINAL CHAPTER could even be seen as Lionsgate winking at the audience, “You know we’re not really done with these for good.” There was never any question that there would be another SAW movie at some point, it was only a matter of time.
That time is now, as producion is well underway on the eighth SAW film, SAW: LEGACY, which is being directed by sibling director duo Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig from a screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger. The powers that be are doing a hell of job keeping this thing under wraps, too. Even though it’s filming, we don’t have a synopsis, we don’t know who’s in it, nothing.
A couple of pictures may have recently leaked from the set, though. These images were brought to the attention of our friends over at Bloody-Disgusting, and while their legitimacy can’t be verified – these could very well just be shots of an elaborate Halloween display – they do offer an interesting visual. A visual that brings to mind those grave scenes from the two films that followed FRIDAY THE 13TH’s final chapter. Like Jason Voorhees, has John “Jigsaw” Kramer been exhumed for some reason?
It may be a while before we find out whether or not Jigsaw’s corpse is unearthed in SAW: LEGACY, but we’ll know without a doubt when the film is released into theatres on October 27, 2017.
