You can't keep a good family down, especially one as delightfully morbid as The Addams Family. Close to four years ago, MGM began moving ahead with an animated Addams Family film in the wake of the cancellation of Tim Burton's stop-motion Addams Family project, but, we've heard very little since then. So little that I'd actually forgotten it was even in the works, but now THR reports that MGM has snagged Conrad Vernon to direct this latest incarnation of The Addams Family.
Conrad Vernon, who co-directed SAUSAGE PARTY alongside Greg Tiernan, will also produce THE ADDAMS FAMILY from a script by Pamela Pettler (CORPSE BRIDE), and CG animation work is already underway in Vancouver at Cinesite Studios. Created by cartoonist Charles Addams in the late 1930's, the Addams Family consists of Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama, their butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing, and Gomez's Cousin Itt. Many adaptations followed, including several TV series, both live-action and animated, as well as a series of feature-films, but it's been nearly twenty years since the last major Addams Family project. Well overdue for a comeback, I'd say.
Lest you think Conrad Vernon's output is all foul-mouthed food orgies, he also co-directed SHREK 2 (while also serving as the voice of the Gingerbread Man) and directed both MONSTERS VS. ALIENS and MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED. He's also slated to direct an animated JETSONS film for Warner Bros.
Anyone else excited for THE ADDAMS FAMILY's return to the big-screen?
