When a grisly murder shocks Los Angeles in 1938, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of the city. Billed as the "spiritual descendant" to Penny Dreadful, the new Showtime series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels looks and feels quite different from its predecessor, something which the new trailer definitely drives home.
If we're all being honest with each other, I'm sure a big part of the draw is Natalie Dormer, who plays a shape-shifting demon known as Magda. Dormer has previously described Magda as a "delicious, multidimensional thrill," an "agent of chaos" who can "sow the seeds of disorder." As far Magda's plans on Earth, the actress said, "she’s fundamentally a skeptic of humanity. She says in the first episode, ‘I give human beings a choice, but they choose time and time again to be seduced by the more baser, selfish roles.'"
The official synopsis for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels
A spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story set in Victorian-era London, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will debut on Showtime on April 26, 2020.
