With the talent that's being assembled for the new HELLBOY film (which was announced as HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN but is now simply called HELLBOY), I can't complain that the franchise is being rebooted rather than continuing on from Guillermo del Toro's HELLBOY and HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY. A Hellboy movie directed by Neil Marshall, starring David Harbour as the title character, Ian McShane as his father figure Professor Broom, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen? Hell yes, I'm all for this.
I'm familiar with all of the players mentioned above, but now someone a bit more mysterious has been added into the mix. Newcomer Sasha Lane, who made her acting debut in the 2016 film AMERICAN HONEY (which I haven't seen), has joined the cast to play Hellboy's love interest. While the character's love interest in the previous film was pyrokinetic Liz Sherman, here it will be a character named Alice Monaghan.
In the comic books, Hellboy rescues Alice from the fairies that kidnapped her. She retains some supernatural gifts because of her time with the fairies.
The reboot will be taking a darker, more hard-edged approach to the material than Guillermo del Toro's film did – this is expected to be an R-rated movie featuring bloodshed and decapitations.
Written by Aron Coleite, Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, HELLBOY is being produced by Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Mike Richardson for Millennium Films and Lionsgate. Christa Campbell, Lati Grobman, and Carl Hampe serve as executive producers.
HELLBOY is aiming to start production next month.
