It looks like Sarah Michelle Gellar is getting ready for a comeback, with her signing on to her first live-action TV pilot in years. The project, Hot Pink, is a YA show for Amazon Studios that's based on Elana K. Arnold’s National Book Award finalist What Girls Are Made Of. According to Deadline, the novel "is described as exploring 'the real, knotted, messy, thriving heartbeat of young womanhood' through the eyes of a 16-year-old girl."
While it's maybe not the high-concept action vehicle Gellar's Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans might have been hoping for, it does indeed sound like it has some interesting parallels to her most famous role. Let's not forget, at its heart, Buffy was always a coming-of-age show, and while her role has yet to be revealed it'll be interesting to see this former teen icon play the adult side of the equation. That said, I wonder why Gellar's never gotten another high-concept action show since the short-lived Ringer? It feels like people would be thrilled to see her back out there kicking butt.
Still, Hot Pink has some pretty talented folks involved, including Desiree Akhavan, director of the Miseducation of Cameron Post, which was a breakout hit at Sundance a few years ago. Notably, it's also being produced by Annapurna, who's had a hand in some of the most acclaimed movies and tv shows of the last decade, including Her, American Hustle, Booksmart, Zero Dark Thirty, and more. Here's hoping it'll be a worthy comeback role for Gellar, who nonetheless has been very busy as a voice-over artist on shows like Star Wars: Rebels and more.
