Sandra Bullock went back to a genre this year that has been truly good to her over the years but she did so in a climate where this particular genre didn’t guarantee a hit. Romantic comedies once ruled the box office in a big way but in recent years their financial potential has dwindled and most take to streaming services instead of the multiplex. In many ways, The Lost City was a gamble for Bullock and Paramount Pictures but it was one that paid off. Opening back in March, the film debuted at $30.4 million and managed to leg its way to $105.3 million at the domestic box office. Its global haul stands at $188.6 million and you would think having a hit like this would make Bullock want to seek out her next role but the actress is stating that she’s taking a break from acting and isn’t really sure when she’ll get back to it.
During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Bullock opened up about her decision to take a step back from acting and producing. The actress, in addition to starring in The Lost City, served as a producer on the project and it’s a role she has played in many of her more recent endeavors. Bullock filmed Netflix’s The Unforgivable and The Lost City back to back and she’s admitting that she’s “burnt out.”
“I don’t want to be beholden to anyone’s schedule other than my own. I’m so burnt out. I’m so tired, and I’m so not capable of making healthy, smart decisions and I know it.”
Bullock has starred in over 50 films and several of them have been box office hits. On top of this, she’s a two-time Academy Award nominee, winning after her first nomination for The Blind Side. She really has nothing left to prove to anyone and when asked how long her break might be, she expressed that she really doesn’t know:
“Work has always been steady for me, and I’ve been so lucky. I realized it possibly was becoming my crutch. It was like opening up a fridge all the time and looking for something that was never in the fridge.”
What’s important for the actress right now is that she started to tell herself that work doesn’t need to validate her. The great thing about Sandra Bullock is she’s considered America’s sweetheart to so many people that when she does decide to get back to it, she’ll have fans waiting for her with open arms.
In the meantime, you can catch Sandra Bullock one more time on the big screen this year in Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt. She put in some cameo work for the film after Pitt did her a solid by doing a cameo in The Lost City. That film opens on August 5, 2022.
