Noah Baumbach is one of the best humanist directors working today and always tells poignant, sympathetic and funny stories with all-star casts. His most recent film – THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES – is his most talk-about films in years thanks to outstanding work from Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman. Sandler received raves out of Cannes, which in itself is a rare sentence, and word is his work is more than worthy of some awards attention. Netflix will release the movie on October 13, and before that, you can watch the trailer above!
Here is the plot synopsis:
The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) is the emotional and comic intergenerational tale of adult siblings (Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Elizabeth Marvel) contending with the long shadow their strong-willed father (Dustin Hoffman) has cast over their lives. With an original screenplay by Baumbach, the film also stars Emma Thompson, Grace Van Patten, Adam Driver, Candice Bergen, Judd Hirsch, and Rebecca Miller. The film was produced by Scott Rudin, Baumbach, Lila Yacoub, and Eli Bush.
You can tell from the trailer that Stiller and Sandler will give some career-best performances here, and it begs the question regarding why the latter won't do stuff like this more often. There are some awards hopes for this flick, but Netflix has yet to stand out in the awards race, and who knows if this will be the year they can break through. Lord knows nothing will sound stranger than Academy Award-nominee Adam Sandler.
The movie hits Netflix and select theaters October 13.
