Samaritan: Sylvester Stallone superhero pic sets August 2022 date

It looks like we’ll all have to wait a little longer to finally see Sylvester Stallone’s live-action superhero flick, Samaritan, with Box Office Mojo reporting that the film will now open on August 26th, 2022. The film had initially been slated to open this summer. Still, after the original June 2021 date came and went, the studio behind it, United Artists, held off announcing a new date, likely due to Covid-19 concerns. So, in the end, it’s been moved to next summer when things have calmed down a bit, and this can get a legit theatrical run without any asterisks next to it.

Samaritan stars Stallone as a famed superhero missing for twenty years but is discovered by a young boy (Javon Walton). The film is directed by Overlord’s Julius Avery and marks a rare superhero film for Stallone, given his mixed history in the genre. His 1995 Judge Dredd adaptation was a notable flop. Still, since then, Stallone’s dipped his toe into the genre thanks to his relationship with writer-director James Gunn, who enticed him to do a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and to voice King Shark in this week’s The Suicide Squad. 

Stallone’s been all-in on promoting this film via his Instagram, and it looks like a gritty, grounded take on the genre that might give him another iconic role. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this one for a while, and part of me is happy United Artists is delaying it rather than sending it to streaming. If Expendables 4 also happens this fall as promised, 2022 might be a hardcore year for all of us Stallone superfans.
