It’s been quite some time since Kevin Costner last stepped behind the camera for a feature film, but he’ll be doing just that with Horizon, an epic western which has long been the actor’s passion project. Deadline has reported that Sam Worthington (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Sienna Miller (Anatomy of a Scandal) have joined the cast of Kevin Costner’s Horizon.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will chronicle a “multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre- and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. Experienced through the eyes of many, the epic journey is fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements to the interactions with the Indigenous peoples who lived on the land and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.” In addition to directing Horizon, Kevin Costner also co-wrote the script with Jon Baird, and will be producing, financing, and starring in the project as well.
“I am very excited and humbled to go on this incredible and important journey with Kevin, who is one of the industry’s finest and inspiring storytellers,” Sam Worthington said in a statement. Sienna Miller added, “I am so excited to go on this epic journey with such a legendary actor and director at the helm. The story is riveting. I am very honored to be a part of it.” As well as Kevin Costner, Sam Worthington, and Sienna Miller, Horizon will also feature Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things). Production will begin in Utah on August 29th and is expected to last for over 200 days. Costner has previously said that he’s envisioned the sprawling epic as four nearly three-hour-long movies which could eventually be split up for TV.
I’m happiest because at one point in TV — where you can get your largest audience — they’re going to get to see it the way I intended it to be seen. It will eventually be cut up into [hour-long episodes] or 42 minutes — however TV works. But their first viewing of it will be as four 2-hour and 45-minute movies. And every three months, one will come out. If you’re interested in those characters, the hope is that you’ll really want to watch the next one, but it won’t be in hour segments.
I can’t wait to see what Kevin Costner has in store for us with Horizon, but while we wait for his western epic, Costner will next be seen in the fifth season of Yellowstone on Paramount+ later this year.
