After directing a trilogy of Spider-Man films, Sam Raimi returned to his horror roots and delivered the highly entertaining Drag Me to Hell. For this weekend’s release Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (read our review HERE), Sam Raimi has spent more time in the superhero world, and while speaking to Slash Film, he indicated that next he would like to make a smaller horror movie as a follow-up to his latest big budget superhero spectacle.
Slash Film asked Raimi if he would like to make another small movie, “something the size of The Gift or one of the Evil Dead movies”, or if he’s comfortable and content making big movies. He replied,
I like them all actually. Each presents its own unique challenges to the filmmaker and each is incredibly satisfying. I wouldn’t want to go back to the budget of the first “Evil Dead.” I mean, that was brutal. That was extremely difficult. But I would like to make something the size of “The Gift” or “A Simple Plan,” those smaller budget movies that are just about the characters and thrills. An intense little horror movie would be great.”
If we could see Raimi go back and forth between blockbusters and smaller thrillers or horror movies for the rest of his career, I would be quite happy.
Raimi has dabbled in horror a few times since the 2009 release of Drag Me to Hell. He directed the first episodes of the shows Ash vs. Evil Dead and 50 States of Fright, and also contributed to the horror short The Black Ghiandola, a project undertaken by the Make a Film Foundation for a terminally ill teenager named Anthony Conti. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the first feature film Raimi has directed since 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful. That wait was way too long. It’s great to have him back, and hopefully next we’ll have a lot more Sam Raimi movies of varying size and budget to look forward to.
