Nick Fury, the one-eyed ultra-agent played by Samuel L. Jackson, was a lynch pin of the MCU’s early days, starting the team and giving sage advice when Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) was having a fit. However, we haven’t seen him much. We know Jackson won’t be in any of this year’s films (GUARDIANS 2, SPIDER-MAN or THOR 3), but what about next year’s slate of movies? According to Jackson, 2018 will probably be just as Fury-less.
While talking with New York’s Hot 97 radio Jackson was asked if he would be in the upcoming solo BLACK PANTHER movie, only to deliver a heartbreaking answer (at the 34 minute mark):
Uh…no. They’re not letting my black ass go through Wakanda. I was trying, I asked. I was like, “What do you mean [he can't be in it]?”
He did follow-up regarding his character’s whereabouts though, saying how Fury has been on the road hunting down a very specific baddie:
You didn’t see me in Civil War. I’m still out there trying to figure out what The Skull [Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving] is doing…
As for the upcoming hero mash, INFINITY WAR, Jackson spoke with Collider and seemed shocked when he was informed he was set to be in the movie:
You know that?! How do you know that, and I don’t know that?! You know that, for real?!
In fact, he doesn’t seem to know a ton of info about the movie, let alone if he’s in it:
I don’t know. I haven’t seen it. I haven’t heard that. I keep asking, “Am I in Infinity War?"
Has he even been given a shoot date??
No. I don’t know.
So, basically, when it comes to the question of when Fury will return the answer seems to be along the lines of “no f@cking idea.” Jackson did say in the radio interview he’s only done seven of his contractually obligated nine movies, and that he still “has stuff to do.” We last saw him in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON two years ago, but he didn't do much except provide aforementioned advice. His IMDB page cites he is filming INFINITY WAR, but Jackson's words hint otherwise. Still, there's that whole Red Skull business to talk about! Eh, Fury could just be binge watching GAME OF THRONES for all we know.
I love Jackson's Fury, but he's not around as much simply because he isn't needed too much. Aside from S.H.I.E.L.D. being defunct, the heroes have so much going on now they don't need to be "brought together". They're around, and when the universe needs them (or the plot demands it) they'll return to fight with one another. Still, it would be cool to see him lend a hand again. But how would he do that now? A pistol won't stop Thanos, surely. Maybe Jackson's just playing coy, and this is all a ruse. I don't know who to trust anymore!
