Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Melissa Joan Hart is willing to cast more spells for a reboot

Melissa Joan Hart is ready to blow the dust off her spell books and get witchy for Sabrina the Teenage Witch fans. Speaking with the Associated Press, Hart said she’d be interested in a reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but making it happen is more complex than fans anticipate. When asked about getting the cover back together to brew another concoction of coming-of-age comedy, Hart replied, “The answer to the Sabrina reboot question is, unfortunately, I can’t just point my finger and make it happen. There’s so much red tape. Who owns it? Who would pay for it? What network would it be on?”

Sorting the details of organizing a reboot is hard work, but we’ve seen the entertainment industry work miracles before. While talking with Hart, the Associated Press asked if all the pieces fell into place would she be willing to participate in the reboot.

“I would totally be interested if it was the right way to do it,” Hart admitted. “I feel like so many of these reboots were done wrong, so many were rushed, so many were not well thought out. And the thing is, sometimes it’s just that the fans, they think they want it, but the fanfiction is so much better.”

Based on the Archie Comics series of the same name, Sabrina the Teenage Witch aired from 1996-2003. The witchy teen comedy revolved around Sabrina (Hart), a young witch living with her two aunts and a feisty feline familiar named Salem. While trying to pass as an ordinary teenager, Sabrina uses her magical abilities to navigate high school, her love life, and everything in between.

While Netflix already rebooted Sabrina for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I believe a revamp of the original sitcom would be a different animal. Chilling Adventures is darker than Hart’s 1990s series, with adult themes, Riverdale levels of explicit content, and gore featured throughout. An honest-to-goodness reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch would likely be a lighter, more comedic affair. I could picture Hart’s Sabrina, still living with her aunties Zelda (Beth Broderick) and Hilda (Caroline Rhea), raising a daughter while navigating contemporary times and troubles. It’s not the most imaginative take, but I’m not about to give them ideas for free.
