Ryan Reynolds says there are “infinite possibilities” for Deadpool at Disney

When the Disney/Fox merger took place, one of the fan concerns was that DEADPOOL, which was under 20th Century Fox initially, would have to compromise it's R-rated sensibilities when it transitioned to the Mouse House. Disney & Marvel have insisted this won't happen but we still don't know where a third DEADPOOL film could be headed. Ryan Reynolds was recently a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and he expressed some optimism as to what could be in store for "the merc with a mouth."

During the interview, Fallon asked Reynolds where DEADPOOL stands after Disney absorbed most of Fox's media assets last year and Reynolds explained that it's all up to Disney now:

"Deadpool was Fox and now it's in the hands of Marvel over there at Disney… I see infinite possibilities in either version. If Deadpool were to be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I think it would be explosive and amazing. What a sandbox to play in. If Deadpool continued to get to just do his own thing and be his own thing, also just infinite possibilities."

The MCU has been a PG-13 affair so far which will make it interesting for the decidedly R-rated DEADPOOL franchise to be included in that universe. Toning down the character would be a disservice to the fans but I suppose Disney also has to think about their family-friendly leanings as well. Either way, Reynolds is just excited to get back to playing the character whenever it should happen:

"There's a lot more story to tell, so I hope we get to do that sooner rather than later."

One thing that's clear is Disney likes their money and that should want to keep them in the DEADPOOL business. Both DEADPOOL and DEADPOOL 2 were praised by critics and earned a combined $1.57 billion at the global box office, all while embracing their R-rated tendencies. I hope they won't be sanitizing the character because that would definitely hurt its potential in the end but I suspect Disney and Marvel already know that. One option is that a standalone DEADPOOL 3 could go fully R-rated and if they include the character in the greater MCU films, they could tone down the character accordingly since an ensemble feature wouldn't be strictly his film.
