Michael Bay’s 6 Underground gets first action-packed trailer, release date

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Netflix has been sparing no expense in nabbing all sorts of hot properties for the sake of competing on the big stage with studios like Disney and Warner Bros., and SIX UNDERGROUND is one of their priciest undertakings yet. The streaming service has dropped the first explosive trailer for the movie and announced the official release date for the big-budget action flick starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Michael Bay, and viewers will get to see just where all the money went as an early Christmas present on December 13.

The release date was announced today and confirmed by Reynolds in his own clever way, taking to social media to post a picture of a now ancient-looking Netflix DVD envelope with the title and release date on it. “Warm up those DVD players because we’re coming to a mailbox near you, December 13th! #6Underground,” he wrote.

Produced by Bay and Skydance Media's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger, the project turned heads last year when it was announced Netflix would be distributing the movie with a price tag of about $150 million. That's a lot of money for a movie that may, at best, have a limited theatrical run, but it was further evidence the streamer is was anxious to be involved by bigger titles. Reuniting Reynolds with DEADPOOL writer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the movie centers on six individuals who fake their own deaths for the sake of starting their own vigilante squad. Along with Reynolds, the movie stars Dave Franco, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Adria ArjonaCorey Hawkins, Ben Hardy, and Mélanie Laurent

As for the trailer itself, well, it looks like a Michael Bay movie, and that will be more than enough to gauge interest from a ton of viewers. That budget was put to good use because it certainly doesn't look like your typical Netflix movie, many of which play out like something the streamer tried to make look like a bingeable TV series. The action looks insane, Reese and Wernick's sense of humor is there, and it looks like a total blast. I wish this gets a theatrical release of some kind because if I'm going to watch Bay go full Bay, I want it on a big screen.

Here's the synopsis:

What’s the best part of being dead? It isn’t escaping your boss, your ex, or even erasing your criminal record. The best part about being dead…is the freedom. The freedom to fight the injustice and evil that lurk in our world without anyone or anything to slow you down or tell you “no.”

6 Underground introduces a new kind of action hero. Six individuals from all around the globe, each the very best at what they do, have been chosen not only for their skill, but for a unique desire to delete their pasts to change the future. The team is brought together by an enigmatic leader (Ryan Reynolds), whose sole mission in life is to ensure that, while he and his fellow operatives will never be remembered, their actions damn sure will.

SIX UNDERGROUND is set for December 13.
