I hope you're ready for something a little more explicit in Ryan Reynolds' upcoming remake of CLUE, the 1985 film based upon the Hasbro board-game of the same name, because screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have said that there's a chance it could wind up with an R-rating. Following in the foul-mouthed shenanigans of the DEADPOOL movies, it seems only natural that the new CLUE film would continue down a similar path and provide Ryan Reynolds with yet another chance to let the expletives fly. While speaking with MTV News correspondent Josh Horowitz at the NYC premiere of DEADPOOL 2, the pair said "Don’t be surprised if Clue is an R-rated… potentially."
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have praised the original film (which was rated PG) as a "wonderful movie," but that they're hoping to let the remake be its own thing.
It will have elements of [the original movie], but it’s important that we don’t try and just rehash it. We want to build on it. We want to take some of what makes it fun and funny, but then we want to do our own thing. It’s about finding that balance. Hopefully we don’t upset the Clue-hounds because there are a lot of them apparently. We didn’t realize this until we signed up.
Are Clue-hounds really a thing? Before 20th Century Fox landed the rights two years ago, Universal Pictures had been attempting to get a CLUE remake off the ground with Gore Verbinski set to direct. A report via The Tracking Board at the time stated that there was "a desire to move the story out of the parlor and make it a game of “worldwide mystery” with action-adventure elements, potentially setting up a possible franchise that could play well internationally." This could still be the plan, but with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick on the case, anything could happen.
DEADPOOL 2 will officially hit theater tomorrow, so be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray!
