According to Deadline, Ryan Gosling has signed on to play Ken in Warner Bros.’ upcoming Barbie movie. The studio had approached Gosling about playing the role some time ago, but the actor initially passed on the part due to his busy schedule. As pre-production took longer than expected, Deadline’s insiders say that Warner Bros. kept in touch with Gosling and scooped him up once an opening appeared.
Margot Robbie is set to star alongside Ryan Gosling in the Barbie movie, which will be centered around the iconic Mattel doll line. Little Women director Greta Gerwig is set to helm the film and she also co-wrote the script with Noah Baumbach. Production on the project is expected to kick off in early 2022. Robbie has previously teased that the Barbie movie won’t be quite what we’re expecting.
Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, “Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,” but our goal is to be like, “Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different – the thing you didn’t know you wanted.
“Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people?” Robbie continued. “Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.“
As for Ryan Gosling, he will next be seen in The Gray Man, an action thriller directed by Joe and Anthony Russo for Netflix. The film will star Gosling as Court Gentry, a veteran CIA operative who is betrayed by his own agency and forced to become a fugitive. Chris Evans also stars in The Gray Man as Llody Hanson, a former colleague of Gentry’s at the agency who is sent to hunt him down. With a budget of $200 million, the film is one of Netflix’s most expensive to date. Gosling is also set to star in Universal’s remake of The Wolf Man.
