About six months ago, it was announced that an adaptation of David F. Walker, Chuck Brown, and Sanford Greene's Image Comics title BITTER ROOT was in the works at Legendary Pictures. Walker, Brown, and Greene are set to executive produce the film with Sean Owolo of Drapetomedia – and now the project has gotten a big name to sign on as producer.
Ryan Coogler, director of CREED and BLACK PANTHER, will be producing BITTER ROOT with Zinzi Evans and Sev Ohanian. The announcement of Coogler's involvement doesn't make any mention of the possibility of him directing the movie, and it seems unlikely that he would take the helm because he's currently busy guiding the BLACK PANTHER sequel toward a 2022 release date.
The BITTER ROOT comic book is set in 1924,
against the vibrant backdrop of the Harlem Renaissance where a family of once-great monster hunters is the only line of defense that can protect New York City from an unimaginable evil that is approaching — an invasion by hideous monsters that were once human beings before they were transmogrified by a supernatural force feeding off of prejudice, spite, and bigotry. By all appearances, the Sangeryes family is not up for the challenge. After generations of tracking, trapping, and curing the monsters, the few surviving members of the Sangeryes line are dispirited and divided over their traditionally merciful tactics. The family must overcome the wounds of the past to have any hope of thwarting the supernatural invasion.
I was already looking forward to seeing how the BITTER ROOT movie will turn out, and now that Coogler is involved I'm even more excited to see it.
Jon Silk and Disney Hall are overseeing the project for Legendary.
