The Russo Brothers explain Captain Marvel’s new look in Avengers: Endgame

When the second trailer for AVENGERS: ENDGAME dropped we got the first look at Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) alongside the team, and the internet collectively lost its mind – and not in a good way. Fans across the web were upset over the new look of Danvers, which switched things up from the minimalist, grungy look in her solo movie to her having flowing hair and a noticeable amount of makeup. Those upset are wondering when she had time for a salon run during all this mayhem, and say the look is not true to her character’s personality as seen last month. Now directors Joe and Anthony Russo have explained the reasoning behind the change, citing it was simply as a matter of the hectic filming schedules for the two movies.

While at the press conference for ENDGAME, the directing duo was asked about the matter by /Film’s Peter Sciretta, and they explained how when it comes to the look and style of a character, they set basic “parameters…in terms of what we need,” but that ultimately it’s left to the actor and the costume/makeup department. For example, when it comes to the ever-changing hairstyle of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, “Every hairstyle that Scarlett Johansson has had and every movie that we’ve done has come from Scarlett Johansson,” Joe said.

So, while Larson’s look for the character is clearly defined in CAPTAIN MARVEL, the choices in ENDGAME are noticeably different (though longer hair seems reasonable given how long she's been away in outer space). Joe Russo explained that the reason for this was that ENDGAME filmed before CAPTAIN MARVEL was put into production, and as her first time playing the character, Larson was still figuring Danvers out and deciding how to define her personality.

“She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made. And I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie. She started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

Larson herself spoke about filming ENDGAME prior to MARVEL during the junket, saying, "Endgame will always be personally dear to me because it was my first time playing Captain Marvel." This meant there were some tough challenges in terms of trying to figure out the character while knowing very few details about either movie. 

“We shot this first so I had to stumble and figure out who this character was with no script for this and no script for Captain Marvel, either, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”
