Russell Crowe is getting wrapped up in The Mummy

Universal is on a roll right now. They've just added a third film to their new monster franchise in 2019, and they've landed a huge casting coup for their upcoming reboot of THE MUMMY. Crowe will be playing a "Jekyll-like" character, which has led some to speculate that the big empty slot might be a JEKYLL AND HYDE flick.

That would be an interesting decision, but seeing as Jekyll and Hyde aren't included among the roster of classic Universal monsters, it seems unlikely. They're probably just trying to Penny Dreadful their franchise, adding other literary icons to spice up the whole thing.

Here's the plot we've managed to sniff out:

Navy SEAL Tyler Colt, who goes on a mission in the Iraqi desert to find a group of terrorists hiding out in a bunker.

However their prey turn out to be mere grave robbers who have all magically died, and when they go inside the bunker Tyler and his team also succumb to some mystical forces out of their control, which is when they realise they are actually in an ancient tomb.

While his men end up turning on each other, Tom's character is the only one make it all the way deep within the tomb alive and find an ominous black iron sarcophagus.

After he tries to open it he is stabbed in the palm and his mind is cursed with visions of The Mummy.

The cast already includes Jake Johnson as member of the military, KINGSMAN's Sofia Boutella playing the titular character, Courtney B. Vance as an Army colonel, Dutch actor Marwan Kenzari, and ANNABELLE's Annabelle Wallis, who is playing a scientist.

Unwrap THE MUMMY on June 9, 2017. Alex Kurtzman is directing and producing the film, which is part of Universal's massive plan to creature a shared universe with their "Classic Monsters" characters. PROMETHEUS co-writer Jon Spaihts is tapping out the script.
