With news of Universal’s Dark Universe breaking last week, we got an idea of where the studio is going with their upcoming slate of monster movies, and who will be playing the classic creepies. We have names like Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem and Tom Cruise attached, but according to rumors there’s still room for one more mega star in the pack, and he is mega-sized indeed.
According to a report from THR about the proposed Dark Universe, superstar Dwayne Johnson is a name still being attached to the role of the Wolfman. The actor was first placed with the role almost a year ago, but since then we haven’t heard too much about the casting. This would make for Johnson’s second role in the Universal monster canon, having starred as the Scorpion King in THE MUMMY RETURNS and THE SCORPION KING.
In the same report THR also mentions how the studio wants Angelina Jolie to star in their upcoming BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN remake with director Bill Condon, further pushing the idea Universal is pulling out all the stops to get A-list talent to flesh out their universe. If the rumors prove true, these actors will join Depp (The Invisible Man), Bardem (Frankenstein), Cruise (Nick Morton), Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde) and Sofia Boutella (The Mummy).
When I first heard the news Johnson was being considered for the role almost a year ago I was a bit on the fence. Though I don’t think he’s the right choice if they want him to play a sensitive, cursed, introspective character in human form, I do think he’d make a terrifying wolf creature who could utilize state-of-the-art make-up to menacing effect. But rumors are just words until proven true, so for now the speculation train keeps on chugging. Don't mind the fog on the side of the tracks…or the howling.
THE MUMMY with Cruise and Boutella arrives June 9.
