Rumor: The reason why Obi-Wan hasn’t had his own Star Wars spinoff yet

Potential spoilers lay ahead, consider this your warning. Disney has plans to release a STAR WARS spinoff, beginning with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, every other year, but aside from ROGUE ONE and the UNTITLED HAN SOLO STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY FILM, we don't really have a lot of concrete information about what they have planned for the future. STAR WARS fans have been vocal about which characters/stories they'd like to see get the spinoff treatment and one of the most requested has been a spinoff (or two) dealing with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Ewan McGregor has expressed his interest in returning to the role several times in the past few years, but Lucasfilm has kept silent about whether or not they would also like to see the further adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican recently appeared on the Rebel Force Radio podcast (via Star Wars News Net) and when the discussion shifted towards Disney/Lucasfilm's STAR WARS spinoffs, Breznican commented on the ever present rumours surrounding an Obi-Wan film.

Um, I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan thing happen beyond Episode IX.

It's important to take this with a grain of salt (or two), but Anthony Breznican says that he would be very surprised if Obi-Wan wasn't referenced in some way in either STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII or STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. Ewan McGregor has already made a very small vocal cameo as Obi-Wan in STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that they have further plans for the character in the upcoming saga films.

I think that they’ll probably be some reference to Obi-Wan in the Saga films, and his connection to whatever characters he happens to have a connection with. I’ve already written that I think that Rey has some kind of connection to him – family connection. So if that’s the case, maybe we see a part of that play out in the future Obi-Wan movie. Ewan McGregor would be the perfect age to reprise that [character].

ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY is set for a December 16, 2016 release.
