We haven't heard much about the future of the ALIEN franchise since Disney purchased ALIEN's home studio of 20th Century Fox, beyond brief mentions that Ridley Scott is still wanting to make another prequel that will bridge the gap between PROMETHEUS, ALIEN: COVENANT, and the original ALIEN while also "evolving" the franchise away from the familiar xenomorph action.
But now a rumor that we first heard earlier in the year, before the Disney/Fox merger was complete, has resurfaced. A rumor that there's an Alien series in the works at Hulu, a streaming service that Disney happens to have 67% ownership of. (Comcast has the other 33%.)
Back in February, HN Entertainment heard that Hulu was developing an Alien anthology series, the idea being that
multiple seasons that could tackle different corners/eras of the franchise, not unlike Noah Hawley’s series Fargo. In theory, I could see them possibly filling gaps in the franchise or crafting brand new stories to tell within the Alien universe."
Now the folks over at We Got This Covered have heard basically the same thing. They have been told there's an Alien series in the works that would be
an anthology series on Hulu, with each season taking place in a different part of the Alien universe.
They note they heard this rumor from the same source that informed them the leads of GHOSTBUSTERS 2020 would be young teens before the roles started being cast. I wouldn't necessarily expect the same source to have solid information on both a theatrical feature at Sony and a streaming series at Hulu/Disney/Fox, but if they do, that's cool.
I would watch an Alien anthology series if they do actually make one. Hopefully we'll be getting some official news about the future of the ALIEN franchise, whether that news is about TV shows or theatrical features, before much longer.
