Khan Noonien Singh is one of Star Trek's greatest villains, and STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN is highly regarded as one of the best Star Trek movies ever made, so it's not hard to see why the franchise would want to return to Khan once more. According to a rumour from Geek Exchange, we may be seeing even more of Khan as the infamous baddie may be the subject of an upcoming Star Trek mini-series brought to us by WRATH OF KHAN director Nicholas Meyer.
Of the six STAR TREK movies to feature the original cast, Nicholas Meyer was involved with the very best of them. In addition to directing both STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, Meyer also co-wrote both of those movies as well as STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME. So when he was brought onboard Star Trek: Discovery as a writer and consulting producer, there was quite a lot of excitement from Star Trek fans, but Meyer recently teased that Discovery wasn't the only Star Trek project he was working on. "One thing that has nothing to do with Discovery is that I am working on another Star Trek project, but I can’t discuss that either," Meyer said. It wasn't clear what that project was at the time, but if it really is a mini-series centered around Khan, it's much bigger than I expected it would be.
Be sure to get your handful of salt ready, but the rumoured series would apparently follow Khan and his group as they struggle to survive on Ceti Alpha V. Khan was first introduced in Space Seed, an episode of The Original Series, and after his efforts to take over the ship were thwarted by Captain Kirk, he was exiled to Ceti Alpha V as it would provide him with the challenge of taming a new world. Unfortunately, as we learned in WRATH OF KHAN, a cataclysm turned the world into a barely habitable desert shortly after their arrival and Khan spent the following years swearing vengeance against Kirk. The mini-series would span the time between their arrival and and their discovery by the U.S.S. Reliant in THE WRATH OF KHAN. When asked about the project, Meyer told Inverse that "I Khannot possibly comment." Cute.
Until it's confirmed, we should obviously take this as rumour, but it's certainly an interesting idea. There's been overlap between the various Star Trek series' over the decades so we're used to having more than one on the air at a time, but a mini-series? That would definitely be new territory for the franchise. If true, and, more importantly, if it works, it might be fun to get a Star Trek mini-series every so often. There are plenty of areas of the Star Trek universe which are still begging to be explored, but which may not be enough to center a full-blown series around. In regards to the rumoured Khan series, it wouldn't be easy for someone other than Ricardo Montalbán to step into the role (sorry, Benedict Cumberbatch), but I'll let you good folks take it from here and begin theorizing.
Which actor has the chops to play Khan and what other Star Trek mini-series' would you potentially like to see?
