Set visits provide a good source for rumors, but don't necessarily amount to much in the endgame. For example, Kevin Smith was fortunate enough to drop by the set of J.J. Abrams' STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, but I somehow doubt we're going to see that image of a portly Stormtrooper running after the good guys. However, an older rumor has resurfaced about BATMAN V SUPERMAN that actually carries with it some logic. Furthermore, there is news about an integral scene in the movie from someone who claims to have been on set, so if you're looking to avoid spoilers, now's your chance to click away.
Some filming is being done in Michigan recently, and as the report from WILX goes, there was a scene taking place at a swanky Metropolis party with paparazzi and the like lined up on the outside to watch the world's most famous go in. At said party, Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor get into a physical altercation, resulting in a military presence. The scene is reported to use some heavy special effects, so I imagine it's not just of the glove-to-face slapping variety. To further corroborate this, a casting call for extras with military experience was done previously. It's interesting to note that the name Bruce Wayne was used, and not Batman. Perhaps Mr. Wayne is in town checking things out after the wanton destruction taking place at the end of MAN OF STEEL?
This brings us to Jena Malone as Robin. While she wasn't apart of the above scene, in the same report it's mentioned that she has been cast as the caped crusader's sidekick. Whether or not the reporters from WILX pulled that from their source on set or just the internet is anyone's guess, as they don't specify. What actually lends the rumor some weight is that we know the Bruce Wayne/Batman we're seeing in this film is of the older variety. An earlier rumor suggested that Batman and Robin weren't even on speaking terms. There's a lot of inspiration being pulled from Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns which features Carrie Kelley as the titular Robin with red hair. The set visit from Jena Malone could be just that, considering that she worked with Zack Snyder on SUCKER PUNCH, or perhaps a short cameo from an old ally of Batman's. Of course, the photo below from Jena Malone's Instagram only added fuel to the fire.
So can we expect Robin to make a cameo and then perhaps join up with Batman for the JUSTICE LEAGUE films or a Batman solo movie? It's anyone's guess at this point, although Warner Bros. certainly isn't shy about throwing a lot of characters our way given their recently revealed slate of upcoming DC films. One thing for sure is that Warner Bros. is not messing around, and is looking to make BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE one of the biggest comic book event films of all time. We have a little ways to go, so rest assured we'll keep ya up to date as it comes.
BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE hits theaters March 25, 2016.
